At St Benedict’s our curriculum is structured in order to inform and support the practice of the Catholic faith through shared Gospel values. These values ensure that young people achieve the full potential God has for them, irrespective of ability, background or personal circumstances.

Through our curriculum we seek to provide young people with the relevant knowledge, understanding and Cultural Capital to inspire their future learning and careers and which enables them to play an active part in society, whatever their background. Our curriculum enables young people to seek truth and wisdom in their own lives and look beyond the superficial and misleading.

Our curriculum provides opportunities for young people to learn about the society (both local and global) in which they live their lives and to connect with others with kindness. We ensure that our curriculum is broad and balanced to enable all young people to learn about the diversity of human achievement and endeavour and the importance of mutual respect and compassion for others.

Our curriculum encourages students to learn from their mistakes, make progress and see success as an ongoing process. Our curriculum helps students to approach their futures with hope and optimism and through personalised approaches to learning, see that their own future can be a bright one.
At St. Benedict's we believe that a carefully planned and sequenced curriculum is the foundation to an outstanding education for all our students and that this will enable them to go on and succeed in life. The curriculum is designed and in such a way that it builds on pupils' prior knowledge, creating links across topics and between different subject areas.
Each subject's Head of Department uses their expertise to carefully construct a curriculum promoting a deep understanding of a wide range of topics. Teachers plan lessons that allow students to embed and recall knowledge through techniques such as interleaving of topics and spaced practice. This builds firm foundations for progression to the next level and exam success.
Key Stage 3
Students at St. Benedict’s study a broad range of subjects during Year 7, 8 and 9 developing a deep understanding in each subject area with the aim of preparing them for the next stage in their lives. There is a strong focus on the core subjects of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as the subject areas of Modern Foreign Languages, with the majority studying 2, and Humanities of Geography and History.
Students also get the opportunity to develop their knowledge of and skills in the creative arts, studying Art and the three disciplines of Design and Technology: Product Design, Resistant Materials and Food Nutrition, as well as the performing arts of Drama and Music. In addition to this students enjoy the study of Computer Science and Physical Education.

* Students study 3 periods of French and 2 of Spanish in 4 of 6 teaching groups. In the remaining two students study French for 4 hours and have an extra hour of English.
** As part of St Benedict's Design and Technology curriculum, students spend a term studying Product Design, Resisitant Materials or Food Nutrition in each year of Key Stage 3.
Key Stage 4
Students begin Key Stage 4 in Year 10 where they will study subjects they intend to sit at GCSE and other Level 2 qualifications at the end of Year 11. All students continue with the study of Mathematics, English Literature and English Language, separate or combined Science and Religious Education. Students also participate in the non exam subjects of core Physical Education and P.S.H.E.
Students make 3 additional options choices during Year 9 to study alongside the core curriculum in Key Stage 4. All students are expected to pick at least one Modern Foreign Language or a Humanity with the majority of students expected to take a subject from each area.
The options are designed to stretch and challenge pupils and prepare them for the next stage in their education or training. Students can study a mixture of practical and academic subjects from all areas of the curriculum. This gives every pupil a broad and balanced curriculum, but still offers a flexibility to maximise the widest possible choice of progression on to courses post 16.
